Look Closely: Weezer’s Pinkerton

An album loosely based on Giacomo Puccini’s  Madame Butterfly, the album title comes from BF Pinkerton, a character in the opera.

The album cover was taken from a print by ukiyo-e artist Hiroshige, a master of the tradition. The title of this artwork is  Kambara Yoru no Yuki.

There is a hidden map under the CD tray with the title “Isol Della Farfalla e Penisola Di Cane”, Italian for “Island of the Butterfly and Peninsula of Dog.” Also on the map are a ship named U.S.S. Pinkerton and more references to Madame Butterfly (Don Giovanni, Sharpless, Cio Cio San Island):

When viewed at an angle, the back of the album’s jewel case has a vague image of a Geisha. Good on you Weezer!
